There was a time when Canada was well known, by most of the world, as a peace-keeping nation. Regrettably, by following the lead of American foreign policy in recent years, in particular that of George W. Bush, Canada’s reputation as a peace-loving, non-combative nation has been all but destroyed. And as Stephen Harper and his conservative government tries to drag Canada deeper into US style pre-emptive military engagement and police-state domestic security (through Security and Prosperity Partnership, aka SPP), travelling abroad for Canadians has become increasingly more dangerous.

Before one can address the kinds of safety and security threats Canadians are currently subjected to, it is important to understand how the decisions and actions of Canadian elected officials including Brian Mulroney, Stephen Harper have set Canada on a most difficult path and with the most dire of long term consequences to Canadians at large.
Brian Mulroney, while technically, a former Prime Minister of Canada (of conservative ideology), outside of his colleagues, constituents, and former caucus, seems to receive much of his praise from Americans of financial distinction. And there is good reason why Mr. Mulroney has been celebrated and awarded by so many American businesses - he could be considered the father of globalism in Canada. His work to bring Canada into (practically irreversible) restrictive binding agreements with the United States represents a pivotal moment in Canadian economic history (or the demise thereof).
We presently know it as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but it would not have been as possible without Brian Mulroney’s relentless obsession to establish unprecedented access to Canada’s resources, goods and services to American and foreign interests. Brian Mulroney and Ronald Reagan seemed to work as tag team, wrestling out small independent businesses and paving a golden path for large transnational corporations.
And despite the zealous dismantling of Canadian economic independence and sovereignty, the political love affair between Mulroney and Reagan, pales in comparison to the kind of relationship Stephen Harper has enjoyed with George W. Bush. Just as with Mulroney and Reagan, Harper and Bush seemed to synergize their conservative ideological agendas, at incredible economic cost and with permanent consequences.
These incredible costs can be measured (in dollars and blood) and witnessed around the globe. This pro-transnational ideology of greed has set the entire world economic system into a dangerous tail spin (euphemistically referred to as a “recession”) with the potential to unleash enough foreign animosity to require military lock downs at domestic levels.
The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) is considered by many to be a final nail in the coffin of independent local Canadian business. SPP was conceived and is designed to be the security “teeth” of NAFTA. While, among other things, NAFTA represents the rules of American access to Canadian natural resources, goods, and services, while SPP defines the means by which the Canadian and American governments can surveil, monitor, pre-emptively undermine, and even take military action against anyone who stands in the way (or could hypothetically stand in the way) of big corporate interests.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, The Congo, Chad, and Sudan are just a few of the growing number of examples of what happens when the new style of foreign policies America (and a subordinate Canada) are applied.
And this is the backdrop to Canadian travellers abroad. Even when George W. Bush was alienating the rest of the world, for a while, Americans travelling abroad were known to shed their US identity and even wear Canadian flags to avoid confrontation and danger from those who felt the impact of US foreign policy. But the Canadian flag does not seem to have the same comforting power it once enjoyed in most countries around the world.
Now Canada seems to be synonymous with America, whether Canadians like it or not. So if you are planning to travel abroad, be prepared for what many consider a reasonable reaction to very unreasonable foreign policies!
