Amy Goodman, internationally acclaimed and highly respected independent journalist, was on her way to speak at the Vancouver Public Library when her travel itinerary was unexpectly and abruptly interrupted by overzealous Canadian border cops. In addition to being armed and intimidating, they were obsessed with knowing EXACTLY what Ms. Goodman was and was not going to say while she was in Canada, especially as it may have related to the 2010 Olympics in BC!

This may read like a fictional chapter from a Cold War “Checkpoint Charlie” border crossing into East Berlin, BUT, it is disturbing to know that this ACTUALLY HAPPENED in November of 2009!

Many Canadian immigrants may be now wondering about the point of having travelled so far to a land which seemed to offer so much freedom, promise and opportunity, only to discover that the authoritarian terrors and state-sanctioned oppression they were trying to escape was on the boat just behind them!

Is THIS Stephen Harper’s “vision” of Canada and Democracy?

This is certainly not the first time that “Stephen Harper’s” government of Canada has shown undeniable symptoms of police enforcing POLITICAL agendas. His (Security And Prosperity Partnership, aka SPP) agenda of global trade and harmonization of Canadian “security” with America’s (Patriot Act) policies, are being fast tracked with minimal transparency and virtually NO public input and debate - ALL at the great expense of Canadian tax dollars and the Canadian LOCAL ECONOMY.

Why does it seem that Stephen Harper is so afraid of ideas and discussion?

Having a protected border is VITAL to the security of Canadians. Well trained and balanced risk assessment/enforcement is understandable and MUCH APPRECIATED. But, when public funded trained police and law enforcement agencies apply their armed services to detaining, bullying, and even refusing entry to individuals based SOLELY on their IDEAS (no criminal record, no personal history of violence), it sends a chilling message to Canadians and DEMANDS a public response!

Are you waiting for one of YOUR children to be arrested as an “eco-terrorist”?

What is more appalling than the dark cloud of opacity that has descended upon Canadian democracy is the SILENCE. With the exception of a perfunctory brief mention of the cursory facts, corporate-biased mainstream media quickly find other inconsequential fluff to saturate the air waves with (well, only cable wires now). Under Stephen Harper’s watch as a minority “leader”, even a Member of British Parliament has been barred from entering Canada to talk about PEACE. In the US, non-violent environmentally conscious speakers are BEING ARRESTED AS TERRORISTS! Laws which were sold to the American public as protection from those who wished material harm against the US are being used routinely for detaining, incarcerating, and prosecuting non-violent individuals simply voicing ideas and opinions oriented to social consciousness and environmental respect.

What kind of Canada do YOU want?

Appalled on Vancouver Island: The behaviour of Canada border police with respect to this incident is appalling and an absolute disgrace to Canada’s slipping reputation as a free and open democratic society. The message this sends to the rest of the world is the kind that only creates greater gobal animosity towards Canadians and even further reduces the sovereign distinction between Canada and the United States! Shame! Shame! Shame!

I Love Sports, BUT: The olympics used to be about bringing the best of the best athletes from around the world together to celebrate sport. Lately, it seems that each go around, this five ring circus is dragging the worst of worst in government politics. What do opinions about olympics have to do with national security? This is an event I can do without - even though I’ve already paid for it with my taxes! Can I get my money back?
