Just when you thought Stephen Harper’s “governance” of Canada’s domestic and national affairs could not get any more ridiculous nor self-destructive, along comes his latest US trade deal. In this episode of “Harper’s Enlightened Sovereignty”, “his” government has entered a trade deal with the US which prohibits municipal and provincial governments from favouring “Made in Canada” local goods and services over competing US firm bids.
The US has figured out the importance of LOCAL Economy!
While the US still has many issues to resolve regarding its troubling policies on environment, civil and human rights, domestically and internationally, on the economic front, America seems to have taken a significant lead over Canada in recognizing and ACTING ON protecting domestic LOCAL ECONOMY. Not only are the “Made in USA” labelling rules far more strict (in favour of Americans) than Harper’s lame “Made in Canada” laws, but the US has engaged in a highly effective protectionist campaign to buy American. Good for them!
What does Stephen Harper have AGAINST Canadian LOCAL Economy?
Many Canadians are already reeling from Stephen Harper’s “Enlightened Sovereignty” doctrine (a policy which places global interests above local national priorities), but that does not seem to hamper this rogue, proroguing Prime Minister. After all, it was Brian Mulroney’s CONSERVATIVE government which forced Canadians down the irreversible path of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and while Harper’s failed Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) may be steaming on the compost pile, many Canadian local economists are concerned that only the marketing shell of the SPP package was trashed due to unexpected (unwanted) public awareness and objection - once a globalist, always a globalist.
According to Harper, local governments may have to IGNORE the wishes of their constituents!
To keep up the Canadian end of this Stephen Harper’s “Buy America” trade deal with the US, local provincial and municipal governments must commit to not discriminating against US businesses when awarding contracts in Canada.
It’s official - your civic votes may not count!
If you thought that your choice of local government leader could muster much needed support for your own local economy, it would seem that Stephen Harper’s government would disagree. Municipal and provincial leaders, elected on platforms of favouring local trade, may have to ignore their constituents’ wishes on matters where foreign competitors are involved.
